Course Description The purpose of this course is to examine the structural and functional frameworks of the central and peripheral nervous systems and to relate these systems to speech and language processing.

Course Objectives
and Competencies
This course will address the following objectives as well as ASHA Certification Standards III-C (Basic Human Communication and Swallowing Processes)
  • To describe the basic anatomy and organization of the central and peripheral nervous systems;
  • To describe the basic physiological processes involved in neuronal function, neurosensory organization, and neuromotor control;
  • To provide a framework for understanding the anatomical and physiological bases of motor speech disorders;
  • To provide a framework for examining neurologically-based language impairments.
  • Recommended texts
